Art and Design

Learning > Curriculum

Art and Design is a subject within the Arts faculty. We aim to develop students’ individuality and creativity.

Our curriculum references artists and designers, looking at major historical and contemporary practitioners. Students aspire to these artists and designers, using them as inspiration in their own Art work. In classroom environments our curriculum uses teacher and student modelling to inspire work, with individuals wanting to improve with reflections and targets by communicating their thoughts and ideas.

Art throughout all years develops and encourages independence. The majority of work is created through projects. This promotes time management but also allows students to gain confidence to follow their own ideas in each piece of work.  In many projects students will learn new techniques, which is challenging but encourages perseverance which will be a quality many students will need in their future as they will continually develop new skills and work through difficult schemes.

The skills and techniques students learn in Art and Design will require focus and concentration that is vital for studying in class as well as doing a job/ Career later in life. These skills encourage Creativity and ‘Thinking outside the box’, an attribute that is required in many careers.

For many students, Art and Design is used as a creative and expressive outlet. Their ability to have confidence in their ideas is systematically developed. Increasingly students have pride in their work as their Art is shown in displays and exhibitions throughout the school and local community.
