Design and Technology

In Design and Technology we aim to develop creativity, analysis and practical skills. Theoretical knowledge underpin the curriculum and gives confidence to succeed as well as developing core transferable skills, such as collaboration and communication.

Design and technology is part of everyday life and is constantly evolving. Students will cover a range of disciplines from Food Technology, Product Design and Graphics and will work with all materials including Woods, Plastic and Metals along with fresh ingredients. Students will utilise research skills to provide knowledge and inspiration, which will allow them to operate with greater information and imagination when they design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. Within this they will learn to consider the wants and needs of others as well as the moral and ethical responsibility which Designers and Manufacturers currently face. Students will understand that high-quality design and technology is important to the creativity, culture, sustainability, wealth and well-being of the nation and the global community.

Design and Technology enables students to acquire a broad subject knowledge and opportunities to apply the learning they gain across other disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Geography, Computing and Art. Students will gain skills in problem solving, innovation, resourcefulness, resilience as well as learning how to take risks. Students will become capable and confident learners who select and operate practical equipment safely and independently to produce high quality prototypes. Design and Technology offers the opportunity for our students to develop analytical skills through critiquing the work of current and past designs, allowing understanding of the impact on daily life and the wider world. Students will learn to apply theses skills in an evaluative capacity to their own work to foster an environment that encourages personal development as well as learning.
