Drama is a subject within the Arts faculty and we strive to develop students’ confidence and expressive skills. Students are encouraged to become creative thinkers and believe in their own ideas. By producing and rehearsing work for performance, students learn to manage their own time and think independently. Performing on stage requires confidence and students learn to control their vocal and physical skills to communicate clearly to an audience.
Drama requires students to work together by sharing responsibility, cooperating, communicating and compromising to achieve a common goal. Students learn that their contribution to the group is integral to success and learn how to support each other throughout the drama process. By exploring different stimuli and plays students gain an understanding of the world around them. Learning about different characters feelings and situations encourages empathy. Hard work and perseverance is needed to develop the required skills to create and perform a piece of theatre. Students develop resilience and a mind-set to help them in the future.
Students learn about the careers within the theatre and research the work of practitioners, playwrights, directors, designers and performers and students take inspiration from professional works. Our lessons use teacher and student modelling, final pieces are performed to an audience and opportunities are sought to share work across key stages. Throughout their learning students reflect on their own and others’ work and set targets to help further progress. In Drama we recognise success and help students develop a sense of pride in their achievements
