Mathematics

We aim to foster in students an enthusiasm, passion and fascination for mathematics, so that they can develop their full mathematical potential. We provide an environment where all pupils are challenged and supported and have an entitlement to a variety of learning experiences facilitated by a number of teaching modes.

In order to secure a deeper understanding of their mathematics, students can expect to be questioned “how” and “why” a mathematical process is undertaken. Equally, we encourage students to generate their own questions for staff, their peers and themselves using accurate mathematical language.

If this deeper understanding is achieved, students are better equipped to apply their mathematics and mathematical thinking to make connections between concepts and skills and build on their existing knowledge. This enables students to develop into logical and systematic problem solvers with an increased confidence and ability to effectively communicate mathematically.

Students are supported in an environment where it is acceptable to make mistakes in mathematics as it is important to learn from these mistakes and address their misconceptions.

Students are encouraged to explore mathematical situations in order to spot patterns, hypothesise and experience the wonder and realisation of mathematics.

We want students to understand how mathematics relates to real life and have to an appreciation of the power, elegance and beauty of mathematics and its historical roots. We intend students to be equipped with a confidence in numeracy and the tools to manage the mathematics of everyday life in the outside world.

In mathematics we aim for all pupils to have:

COURAGE and confidence to accept and take on new challenges.

OPTIMISM to believe they “can do it” and be successful.

REGARD for other students’ questions, contributions and alternative methods and solutions.

ENDEAVOUR to persevere with a challenge and seek to understand their mathematics rather than just “do it”.
