Music is a subject within the Arts Faculty, where we aim to develop students’ independence and aspirations.

Through our curriculum, students learn about a breadth of musical genres and conventions and base projects upon these. Students have the opportunity to use a wide variety of instruments and computer software to create their own performances and compositions. We always aspire to perform our ideas to others to receive feedback and improve on our work.

All of our Schemes of Work are project based; this way of working allows our students to gain independence alongside a plethora of other skills used in their wider lives. We support our students in being resilient and encourage them to persevere with projects that they initially find challenging. In project-based topics, students have to be good time managers as well as being adaptable and able to work with a range of peers in different group situations. Through integration of practice students develop their knowledge and skills through the integration of performance, composition and listening. They also participate in collaborating with others as musicians, adapting to different musical roles and respecting the values and benefits, others bring to musical learning.

The skills and techniques students learn in Music will require focus and concentration that is vital for studying in class as well as doing a job later in life. These skills encourage creativity, ‘thinking outside the box’ and determination; attributes that are all required in many careers.  This is taught through using existing musical knowledge, skills and understanding for new purposes and in new contexts.  Students will also explore ways in which music can be combined with other art forms and other subject disciplines.

For many students, Music is as an expressive outlet. Continuously, their ability to have tenacity and confidence in their ideas develops within the classroom. Students are able to communicate through exploring how thoughts, feelings, ideas and emotions can be expressed through music. Because of regular performances in concerts and events in school and to the wider community, students take great pride in their work.
