We live in an increasingly scientific and technological society, where a background understanding of core scientific principles gives students the opportunity to make informed decisions throughout their lives. Our aims are that students leave Woodlands with the scientific knowledge and skills to perform an active and positive role in society.

Studying the sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science, is not only about gaining in knowledge and understanding of how the world works; it is also about developing an analytical way of thinking, where students will learn to plan experiments, analyse evidence and evaluate results. It is about an increasing awareness of how theories have developed over time, how discoveries are made and opens students' eyes to future possibilities to improve life not only for themselves but for the world of which they are part. From the development of new medicines to developing space travel, designing replacements for plastics or monitoring habitat loss; a thorough grounding in the sciences prepares students for a lifetime of possibilities.

be courageous by having a go, asking questions and helping others. Science is about working together to explore new ideas. Many of the best discoveries occurred when someone investigated a strange question. All scientists ask 'why?' a lot!

be optimistic about their own career prospects, and the future of society as a whole, through the development of scientific understanding. There are amazing and creative discoveries being made all the time to help solve difficult problems.

show regard for others by making informed decisions based on critical analysis of scientific evidence and allowing others to share their conclusions and questions too.

show real endeavour by showing resilience when dealing with new or challenging scientific concepts. Many of the topics are about things we cannot easily see and so need to be modelled, imagined or calculated. It is normal to not immediately understand everything; science links together how all our world and the universe works!
